? In the transition from the design and engineering process into production, there are always gaps in the system. How does the combination or coupling of Open Plant and Comos avoid this thread?
Walters: Companies have significant benefits to gain from combining the Comos platform for integrated data management with the open and flexible environment of Open Plant. The object-based data exchange provides designers with a great deal of flexibility. The data (2D and 3D) is always consistent, which reduces costs. The user has the opportunity to process P&IDs and other wiring diagrams offline, making it easier than ever before to commission subcontractors.
Data Handover activities incur less cost, and global engineering will be possible at low-cost hubs. An important point here is the integration of legacy models as well as models from third-party systems to maintain the value of existing asset data and jump-start new designs. Plant safety and reliability improves due to the integration of electrical and instrumentation design, construction, and commissioning workflows with plant management.
Achieving Interoperability
? Interoperability is only possible if the customers use both software tools. How big is the installed customer base?
Walters: We have a significant mutual user base, especially in the German process manufacturing industry. We expect these mutual users to be early adopters of the tools we are producing to share information.
? What do you do to convince customers who haven´t so far implemented both tools of the benefits of the co-operation?
Walters: Siemens and Bentley have been working alongside each other in the iRING community and with Fiatech. The process manufacturing industry has, for a long time, expressed the desire for far greater interoperability than is currently being delivered off the shelf, and both our companies have been frustrated by the slow pace of developments within the standards community.
We are currently the only vendors who are truly partnering to address these requirements. With this collaboration, we can deliver a better interoperability across the different plant disciplines and across the lifecycle to deliver ROI much faster.
