Expensive, unsuitable and not marketable: Hydrogen is scrutinized. The promised miracle substance of defossilization is said to be a waste of energy and not half as environmentally friendly as hoped. What's the truth about hydrogen myths? Time to take a closer look.

Everyone wants hydrogen: Transport companies, the chemical industry, steelworks, house builders and, last but not least, politicians have high hopes for the light gas. But at the same time there is criticism: hydrogen is a "hype" (Friends of the Earth) and a “false solution” (DeSmog International) or even "Sabotages Potential to Decarbonize" (Canadia Publication The Energy Mix). Is it all just slander or is there something to the most persistent H2 myths?

It's the Economy, Stupid: Is Hydrogen Simply too Expensive?

It is said that hydrogen, especially green hydrogen, is unaffordable due to the energy required. And in fact, assuming a price per kilogram of seven euros (sales), around 2.55 Euros (2.78 US $) would be spent on electrolysis and 2.09 Euros (2.27 US $) on electricity costs, according to figures from Bloomberg-NEF and EEX Hydrix. As the "green" gas is ultimately metabolized electricity, at least the latter will not change any time soon. However, the industry hopes that the ramp-up of production will lead to economies of scale, particularly in electrolysis cell production.
