Singapore — Two workers who were carrying out purging of a hydrocarbon pipeline were seriously injured when a fire broke out at Celanese's plant on Jurong Island, the Straits Times reports. The two men from India and Singapore died after surgery at the Singapore General Hospital. The newspaper continues to report that the men were rescued from the top platform of a process vessel, after the fire had been put out by the chemical company’s emergency response team. According to the newspaper article, one worker was employed by Celanese Singapore, while the second one was an employee of Texaco Engineering.

Meanwhile, Argus Media reports that Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower would investigate the incident and has ordered all purging activities to stop at the site. Celanese also started an investigation into the cause of the fire, Chemical Week reports. "An investigation has been initiated with support from Celanese experts," the online news magazine quotes the company, continuing that “Due to this incident, we are experiencing minor operational delays for customer shipments. We expect additional information from local authorities during the week of February 15 which will help us determine any additional delays”.

Celanese operates a 210,000 t/yr vinyl acetate monomer plant and a 600,000 t/yr acetic acid plant on Jurong Island. The company also has ethyl and butyl acetate production plants at this site.
