France: PMMA Value Chain Arkema Participates in Project Promoting Post-Industrial and End-of-Life Waste Recycling
The MMA two project comprises 13 partners from six different countries representing all stages of the PMMA value chain, aims to develop a new and innovative process to recycle post-industrial and end-of-life PMMA waste into second generation MMA (methyl methacrylate) monomer. As a partner in this European project, Arkema's Scientific Director Jean-Luc Dubois chairs the project's Advisory Committee.
The four-year European project is chaired by scientific experts from the PMMA industry, end-users of recycled MMA, and academia. The role of this committee is to advise the Steering Committee on the project’s strategic issues.
The MMA two project was launched on October 1, 2018, and several actions are now underway including the visit to a car disassembly center. The factory, which is in line with the project, will focus on the recycling of taillights and other parts of end-of-life vehicles. The visit was organized to enable the MMA two partners to better understand the supply of products required for the project. Extensive exchanges between members of the Advisory Committee also took place to structure and advance this initiative. According to the company, the project, which receives funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, is an ambitious one in terms of industrial recycling of PMMA polymer that puts European players at the forefront of recycling technologies.
