Stockholm/Sweden – Activated carbon is a byproduct from industrial processes such as water treatment, and is essential for removing micropollutants, including harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), from drinking water and wastewater. Kemira’s new plant will reactivate spent activated carbon and regenerate it for reuse. The facility, which is expected to be operational in the second half of 2027, will address the increasing demand for sustainable water treatment solutions, driven by tightening European regulations.

Afry will provide a broad range of engineering services—including detailed design, procurement and construction management—and will act as building work environment coordinator to support the development of the plant.

“This project is an important initiative for Kemira, and we are proud to contribute to their vision of sustainable water treatment solutions. With our broad engineering expertise, we contribute to the development of this facility with a focus on innovation and environmental responsibility,” says Guy Skantze, SVP & Head of Chemicals & Biorefining, at Afry.
