What are the products coming out of Pimpri today to reach not only several plants in India but also in other Asian countries? Ok. There are chemical process, multistage high pressure, non-clog pumps and special pumps for refineries. How do they ensure quality? KSB informs, “Today this division uses specialist materials and intelligent designs to ensure top reliability and safety across industrial and process engineering applications. Our products transport acids, alkaline solutions and oils just as securely as fire-fighting water. Hot water and heat transfer systems require our pumps to move fluids at up to 400°C.”
A Foundry to Produce Flawless Casting Components for Fluid Handling
Considering the need for maintaining quality of cast components in liquid movement, in 1974 at Vambori, near Ahmednagar in Maharashtra, KSB started its own Foundry Division (FD). Thus, the multinational ensures the quality of its cast-products completely in-house, which often is not the practice in India. Here, the production line features quality castings in ferrous alloys like CF8M and CF3M for corrosive fluids, CA6NM for boiler feed and mildly corrosive fluids, GSC25 / WCB for refineries and high temperature fluids; NiCI for caustics, alkalis and basic salts apart from cast iron. The non-ferrous alloys include LTB2, and zinc free bronze like CuSn10.
With the addition of the latest technology furnaces, the steel foundry division is now ready to handle 1200 T/a from its previous capacity of 300 T/a. The foundry takes care of critical steel and stainless steel castings required not only by KSB India, but also by the entire KSB group. Contextually, the expansion in form of a new manufacturing facility was commissioned by considering KSB’s commitment towards green environment. A few of the innovative features here include – fixing fume collectors and dust extractors, recyclable sand system for mould and core making and LPG fired heat treatment furnaces.
Powerful Pumps for Power Projects
So far we have seen the KSB product’s applications in various process industries, however, right at this moment India has an ambitious target to have 20 GW of nuclear capacity by 2020 – naturally the question arises, what is KSB’s contribution to this field? Well, the giant pump and valve manufacturer has an undisputed leadership in supplying high precision pumps to hydro, thermal, co-gen, nuclear and supercritical ultra-mega power plants world over. In India too, through a tripartite agreement among Department of Atomic Energy (Government of India), KSB AG and KSB India, came up the Power Projects Division (PPD) of KSB at Chinchwad, Pune, in 1978, in response to the growing needs for special pumps for nuclear power stations. This is a sophisticated plant with a full range of machinery, material testing facilities including non-destructive ones – such as radiography, ultrasonic, helium leakage etc. KSB – PPD is already an established name with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). Products manufactured here include, Primary Heat Transport Pumps (PHT), primary system feed pumps, residual heat removal pumps, primary pressurising pumps, main boiler feed pumps, multi-stage condensate extraction pumps, re-heater drain pumps and auxiliary boiler feed pumps to cater to the Indian power needs.
