BASF has plans to develop a new hexamethylene diamine (HMD) plant in Chalampé, France which will help to expand the company’s HMD production capacity to 260,000 metric tons every year. The firm is also planning to expand its polyamide 6.6 business in Freiburg, Germany.

BASF has entered into an agreement with China BlueChemical and Wuhuan Engineering to develop and supply innovative catalysts, special reactor design and related process technology that enable CO2 direct utilization via reforming and synthesis gas to chemicals. The deal focuses on the utilization of marine gas with a high CO2 content and will help to reduce carbon footprint via improved process efficiency and carbon efficiency.

With this acquisition, Clariant aims to expand its Functional Minerals business in the Americas and further enhance the company’s position in renewable fuels purification. The deal is expected to close in summer this year.

BASF has plans to establish a separate mobile emissions catalysts business due to the massive shift in the automotive industry towards the sustainable electromobility market. The new business is expected to prepare for the changes in the internal combustion engine market. Also, the company’s massive investment in battery materials and recycling will further strengthen this segment.

BASF is all set to create its new subsidiary for renewable energy activities next year. The new business aims at supplying BASF’s sites in Europe with electricity from renewable energies and will also act as a global consulting firm for its Group companies in the field of renewable energies.

Svante along with the University of Calgary have developed a scalable metal-organic framework (MOF) sorbent – Calgary Framework 20 (CALF-20) that captures CO2 with high capacity and at a low cost by making use of rapid solid adsorption and low temperature steam.

BASF’S new project organization ‘Net Zero Accelerator’ aims to accelerate its cross-company activities in the fields of low-CO2 technologies, circular economy and renewable energies in order to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25 % by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2050. The new unit will be led by Dr. Lars Kissau who will report directly to the CEO and make sure that the emission reduction projects are implemented over the next few years.

The European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) has requested to hold talks with the European Commission to jointly develop a ‘EU Chemical Industry Transition Pathway’ to assist the industry to transform into a cleaner and more sustainable one. The move has been undertaken in the background of Cefic’s recent study on the business impacts of the Commission’s ‘EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability’ policy.
