Researchers Produce Ultrapure Lignin for Biobased Materials

Lignin is one of the main components of woody plant parts. Embedded in the plant cell wall, the complex organic matter gives the wood its compressive and breaking strength. So far, lignin is mainly available as by-product in paper and pulp production and contaminated with sulfur. Researchers at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg now succeeded in recovering ultrapure lignin from residual wood.

Germany: CO2 Usage

Successful Transformation of CO2 into Methionine

Methionine is used as an essential amino acid, particularly in animal feed, that is currently based on petrochemical production. A newly developed enzymatic process has succeeded for the first time in using gaseous CO2 as a basic material for the production of a chemical mass product in a biotechnical reaction.
