This also helps pump designers to look and rectify design related issues like cavitations, erosion, off-design related issues, vibration, thermals, strength and various losses etc., ahead of testing. Selection of these virtual physics based tool is again a complex process based on the number of codes availability in the market. It is necessary to select the tool, which can accommodate the complete real world different physics in an integrated manner with easy graphical interface process.
Right selection of these physics based tool is essential for the full life cycle design for any pump. So the obvious question that arises is how to make the correct tool decision or what should be the new methodology for designers to follow.
A Guideline for Pump Deigners: How to Select the Right Tools
Following are the proposed guidelines for making correct tool decisions:
- Easy GUI interface: It becomes obvious for the right tool to have a shorter learning curve and this is mainly driven by an easy user interface. Majority of this can be driven from what is called a template based design tool to perform 3D blade geometry design, meshing, physics setup and post processing.
- Integrated advanced physics technologies: Ability to capture the important design features require advance physics support in the selected tool. Thus, the tools should have some advance turbulence modeling, various types of erosion modeling, particle tracking, material modeling, and composite modeling capabilities.
- Optimization support technologies: Optimization techniques play a crucial role to find the best possible changes to make the design efficient in order to maximize its profit and reduce the motor load.
- High Performance computing (HPC) scaleup: According to our understanding, single point physics does not lead us to best design point and hence multi-design point simulation is required. In some cases we need to perform a multi-physics simulation which becomes computationally expensive and would require more CPUs working together for faster computations. Therefore, HPC capability is a must.
- Globally validated: While contemporary tool developers do an increasingly good job in development some errors are not always caught gracefully and many times much depends on base software and hardware platforms. One of the ways to do it right is to compare how many other customers are using these tools and at what level of product development. Large global customers using a particular tool is always an added advantage as they get validated by several users repeatedly. This customer feedback implementation makes this tool more robust and accurate.
