In vitro meat, cultured meat, lab-grown meat or simply cultivated meat: artificially grown tissue meat in cell culture has been regarded as a future alternative to "classic" meat production for a number of years. However, the production of test-tube burgers is just as complex as traditional biotechnology - and just like biotechnology, it requires the right components.

The vision of producing in-vitro meat from stem cells in a culture fluid in order to produce meat products such as hamburgers or chicken nuggets without animal ethical concerns and with minimal environmental impact is nothing new. What is new is that not only well over 150 start-ups but also players such as Merck, Bell Food and Migros are investing millions in the growing market for meat alternatives.
