Pure Water for Injection Pure Steam and WFI from One Unit

Editor: Doris Neukirchen

The Combitron from Christ reduces the cost of ultra-pure media by up to 30% by generating both pure steam and water for injection (WFI) at the same time. It also occupies considerably less space than separate pure steam and WFI generators, the company notes.

Based on Christ’s existing Multitron distillation unit and Vapotron pure steam generator, the Combitron has an enlarged first-stage column that allows it to supply 1,000 kg/h of pure steam and 4,000 l/h of WFI. The ratio of steam to WFI can be adjusted within the range 2:1 to 1:4, and custom versions with higher outputs are available. The continuously-immersed design of the Combitron’s double tubular heat exchanger minimizes the precipitation of dissolved substances such as silicates, and the consequent risk of damage to the heat exchanger surface as the result of the corrosion process known as rouging. It also ensures the best possible heat transfer, low operating costs and a longer operating life. All in all, the total life-cycle costs of this new unit are reduced. Combitron meets the requirements of cGMP and the various pharmacopoeias, and provides optional documentation for 21 CFR Part 11. An additional touch screen allows continuous process monitoring.
