Treatment of Feed Water and Cooling Water

Last but not least the third example illustrates the important role of high dosing precision for water treatment in power plants.

Construction of a new 900 MW power station places tough demands on everyone involved. The small town of Pesquería is situated in north-east Mexico around 100 kilometres from the border with Texas. Construction of one of Mexico’s largest combined gas and steam power stations started here in early 2014.

From 2017 onwards, three gas turbines and one steam turbine are to provide steel plants with around 900 megawatts of power. In order to meet the planned completion date, 17 metering systems are necessary to treat huge quantities of raw, process and cooling water at extremely short notice. The metering systems supply the circuits with additives designed to guarantee the defined water quality. They had to meet the high quality standards of the Mexican authorities.

Prominent produced and delivered all 17 stationary panel-mounted metering systems, complete with metering pumps, sensors, control technology, tanks and terminal boxes. These systems meter different chemicals for treatment of the feed water and cooling water in various systems. A total of 70 hydraulic diaphragm metering pumps Orlita Mfs and 18 hydraulic diaphragm metering pumps Hydro/2 were fitted. They meet all the pressure, flow, resistance and seal integrity requirements applicable in their field of use. Benefits are: high operational reliability, cost reduction, and low environmental impact.

Summary: All the three examples described here show how process metering pumps and metering systems stand up to the tough conditions in the chemical and petrochemical industries and also deliver a high degree of operational reliability. With their long service life they also offer high availability. Their reliable functional mode reduces energy requirements to a minimum. Rupture-sensing pump and multilayer diaphragms as well as reliable error detection mechanisms ensure that no chemicals can enter the environment, even in the event of damage. Precise, needs-based metering reduces chemical consumption to what is strictly necessary.

Operators benefit in several ways: through cost reduction thanks to the minimal use of chemicals as well as the maintenance of consistently high heat exchanger efficiency. Lower quantities and reduced energy consumption also shrink the environmental footprint.
