Ajax Equipment has supplied metals processing technology producer, Binding Solutions (BSL), with a feed system comprising buffer hopper, screw feeder and agitated screw feeder for a pilot plant handling iron ore and additives. BSL’s technology uses iron ore fines to produce high value pellets for steel making, significantly reducing emissions and raising energy efficiency when compared to traditional sintering and induration methods.

The Ajax Equipment hopper holds approximately 1 ton of iron ore and additives, and features a steep walled ‘V’ section to provide the conditions required for material flow. As well as providing a regular feed of material to the agitated screw feeder below, the horizontal screw feeder also provides active extraction from the hopper through the screw’s variable pitch. The polished stainless steel agitated screw feeder then delivers a controlled feed of ore for further processing, shares the company.

Given the abrasive nature of the material, Ajax recommended that both the feeder and agitated feeder’s screws be produced in a wear-resistant steel. However, the agitated feeder’s features include a retractable screw and casing allowing for easy access should any maintenance be required, adds the firm.

Ajax Equipment mentions that it conducted material flow property tests on a variety of samples sent to them by the client. The tests enabled them to carefully consider the best hopper shape and screw feeder form for ensuring mass flow from the hopper. Using data from the worst-case material ensures Ajax’s design will provide reliable handling with both the worst and best product the client is likely to put through it, concludes the company.
