For Vega, this upward and downward compatibility is taken as a matter of course, and is one of its most important strategic goals. Other members of the FDT Group have, however, committed themselves to the ‘Life Cycle Policy’ only very late. Vega considers it crucial that every DTM, in the sense of simple, costeffective life cycle management, covers any and all modifications.

Life–Cycle Management and Flexibility – No Contradiction

Because users in the processing industries want as little ‘disquiet’ as possible in their systems, Vega issues only one, or at most two, DTM collections per year. The company collects its ideas and incorporates them into the software when the time is ripe. And: it is up to the customer to decide whether he wants to install a newer version or not.

The customer can, but doesn’t have to install updates. However, only by installing an update, the user benefits from the new features. The driver recognises online which functionalities it can offer for a particular instrument and displays only those. Thus, the look and feel of operation mirror exactly the functionality and actual capabilities of the instrument.

Plant Life Cycle Management and The Stale Guide Issue

Vega is also very concerned about the style guide issue. The current DTM collection complies with the specifications of the FDT Style Guide. Here, too, much thought is given to make the technology as simple as possible to handle. Because the style guide determines how manufacturers have to arrange classic functions like status or diagnostic data in their DTMs, and which standard symbols they may use. With its DTMs, the company has been setting standards since 2002. In fact, Vega is a real trailblazer in this area. The FDT Group has incorporated many elements from the German company Vega into its style guide.
