What Currenta Has to Offer...

What do you offer besides integrated product streams?

Hilken: Naturally, we provide the standard chemical park infrastructure including energy and raw material supply, analysis lab facilities and safety and environmental services. The high standard of job qualifications and skills also makes our sites very competitive.

Currenta currently provides training for more than 2,000 young people in 20 different occupational specialties and also offers cooperative education programs. The manner in which the different companies at the site as well as management and employees joined forces to weather the 2009 crisis earned the respect of the international community.

Besides materials and business networking at the Currenta parks, what are the other synergy effects?

Hilken: Chempark has a total of slightly more than 2,700 acres available at its three sites Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen. Currenta has put a management structure in place which allows us to operate as a joint site. This approach has a number of advantages. Although infrastructure such as energy supply — steam, electricity and cooling — and water supply is physically separate, we can work from a common management base when we offer these services to our customers.

Electricity supply is one area where common management produces substantial benefits at the three sites. The three chemical parks also work closely together to manage security, fire safety, etc. In case of emergency, the other sites have access to the turbo extinguisher fire-fighting vehicles which are stationed in Dormagen. We can manage functions such as surveillance, which are common to all of the sites, very efficiently.

What type of production operations will be on the Chempark radar screen in the future?

Hilken: We now have more than 70 companies at our parks. The majority of them take advantage of the integrated product streams and the opportunities which they create. We have companies in the chlorine-based chemical sector at all three locations, and that has obvious advantages from the material flow point of view.
