Standard PCs in the other production areas and offices give the production management team a real-time view of plant assets through the Simatic IT web client, and allow them to carry out extensive OEE analyses to support improvements. The new system uses the existing Henkel standard for OEE reports, and what used to require time-consuming manual data compilation is now done in just a mouse click, with considerably improved data quality and accuracy. On top of the Henkel OEE report the system provides standard analyses of availability, performance rate, MTBA, MTTR and MTBF.

Minimized: paperwork and errors

The Simatic IT MES solution at Henkel Sealant Hannover considerably simplifies pro- duction management. Not only has the system eliminated the mountains of paperwork related to production orders, it also avoids errors by guiding production staff securely through the process. No time is lost on administrative tasks such as printing, distributing, collecting and managing production orders. Instead, employees can dedicate their time to optimizing production. As a result, the expected increase in efficiency resulting from using MES is more than 5 percent.

The users — managers, supervisors and operators — were convinced of the benefits of the MES solution from day one. Even though the system has only been in use for a few months, no-one would be willing to go back to the old system. The entire production operation now runs smoothly and more securely, and managers have the tools they need to optimize efficiency and create sustainable improvements.

Positive effects

“We are really pleased with the Simatic IT solution and the Siemens project team,” says Matthias Breithor. “We simply send the orders directly from the office to the machines, so we are practically managing the plant through the intranet.”

“That’s not only easy, it also improves the production: machine utilization is higher, because it’s easier to identify root causes and eliminate errors. The result is increased transparency, safety and customer satisfaction. Last but not least, we see an increased product yield which contributes to Henkel’s competitiveness.”

“In the near future we will be expanding the system and integrating it with existing automation solutions and recipe management system.”
