Schaffhausen/Switzerland – Oumingzhuang Biological Technology (OMZ), in constructing the latest generation of its ion exchangers, has installed a valve solution from GF Piping Systems. This installation reduces wastewater discharge and enhances efficiency. Based in Tianjin, the company specializes in process technology used in bioplastic production.

Lactic acid serves as an essential raw material for bioplastics—a material suitable for everyday products from bags and cutlery to packaging material. To meet the growing demand for this organic compound, process technology specialist OMZ constructs ion exchangers that extract lactic acid from corn starch. Over a decade-long partnership, the company relies on GF Piping Systems valves for its highly automated solutions.

In 2020, OMZ seized the opportunity to expand the volume and efficiency of its 5th-generation ion exchangers. This expansion required technical solutions ensuring high reliability in acidic environments and integration into a modern automation system.

Throughout the project, OMZ and GF Piping Systems installed a total of 5,000 valves across seven parallel ion exchangers. By employing DN50 valves, they implemented smaller dimensions while maintaining the same flow capacity. As a result, OMZ reduced the size and weight of the facilities. Once installed, the valves achieved higher efficiency, a 40 % reduction in wastewater discharge, and a 30 % increase in resin utilization.

Zhang Tianti, General Manager at OMZ, is pleased with the collaboration's outcomes: "We look back on a decade-long partnership with GF Piping Systems, and their products have significantly influenced our success. GF Piping Systems is a reliable partner, and we look forward to continuing this collaboration in areas such as biotechnological fermentation or lithium extraction in salt lakes. Together, we aim to drive sustainable industrial development."

Wang Yingjie, Senior Sales Manager, Energy Key Account Sales at GF Piping Systems China, adds: "Our ambition is to strengthen our business with a focus on sustainability, social progress, and technological advancement. Bioplastics made from lactic acid play an incredibly important role in replacing petroleum-based plastics in everyday products. Therefore, we are proud to have delivered over 100,000 valves to OMZ throughout our partnership."
