Würzburg/Germany – In Yancheng, eastern China, a fatal accident in a chemical plant has led to an explosion. At least 47 people were killed in the Chemical Park in Jiangsu Province. The local government said another 90 people were seriously injured, many of them in critical condition. According to authorities, more than 640 people suffered cuts and other injuries.
The explosion was triggered by a fire in the Jiangsu Tianjiayi facilities. The company mainly produces pesticides and employs 195 people. The blast of the explosion damaged cars and buildings and, according to various media reports, still resulted in damage a few kilometers away. Residents were brought to safety, several schools and kindergartens remained closed
The disaster triggers bad memories of the catastrophe near the Chinese city of Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. In November 2018, 23 people died in an explosion next to a loading bay at Hebei Shenghua Chemical.
