“Alternatively, our Gewa finned tubes enable a more efficient use of energy or the reduction of liquid inventory depending on the application, which also means a reduction in operating costs. They not only lead to improvements in safety, availability and life of the systems but also to resource-saving processes”, says Lang. The realised projects for new plants and for debottlenecking have become excellent references, so that the heat-transfer experts have managed step by step to place enhanced tubes as first-choice solutions for niche applications.

Cooperation and partnership Technip – Wieland

Decades of close cooperation with key partners from universities and the industry finally resulted in a partnership with the French company Technip in 2007 with the aim to market and develop solutions for high-performance heat transfer. This cooperation is based on the synergies of two world leaders – Technip as an engineering company and Wieland as a supplier of high-performance finned tubes – with both sharing an interest in technologically innovative solutions for high-performance heat transfer.

During extensive development activities, highly attractive solutions have been realised with high-performance process heat exchangers in large-scale plants for key applications, particularly for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and ethylene plants. Main applications are shell-and-tube evaporators and condensers in the propane precooling cycle of LNG units as well as C2 and C3 splitters in ethylene plants. The solutions for shell-and-tube heat exchangers developed under this cooperation are used in both Technip and third-party projects.

The agreement between the two companies had been preceded by a joint development stage of more than ten years during which the Wieland Gewa enhanced tubes were tailored to this specific application from the experimental stage at the laboratory through to industrial implementation.

“In the meantime, about 100 state-of-the-art shell-and-tube heat exchangers for ethylene and LNG plants have been manufactured. Our solutions are now established in the different market segments and are considered to be standard in the industry”, says Arb.

The following two types of enhanced tubes are used in the cooperation projects of Wieland and Technip:
