USA: Capacity Expansion Evonik Ramps up Production Capacities for PMI Foams in Mobile

In response to rising demand for lightweight materials for special applications, Evonik is expanding its production of closed-cell high-performance rigid foams under the Rohacell brand at its Mobile site in the United States.

Mobile/USA – With a comprehensive investment, the specialty chemicals company Evonik intends to significantly increase its annual capacities for the high-temperature-resistant polymethacrylimide (PMI) foams of the Rohacell brand in North America. Completion of the planned production expansion at the Mobile site is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2020. With this project, the company wants to ensure that it can meet the growing demand for PMI-based high-performance rigid foams in North America in the long term.

The expansion of Rohacell production in Mobile includes construction of an additional production hall. Moreover, all shipping logistics will be combined in the new facility. It was in 2008 that Evonik ventured across the Atlantic to start production of high-temperature resistant polymethacrylimide foams in Mobile, Alabama.

For years, the manufacturer has recorded sustained high global demand for its high-performance foams, particularly from the aerospace industry and the electronics sector. Two years ago the company stepped up its Rohacell production in Germany by 20 %.

Rohacell, a rigid structural foam of polymethacrylimide, is used in the design and production of sandwich structures in aviation, cars, ships, sports goods, electronics, and medical technology. This extremely light foam withstands high temperatures and pressures, making it an ideal core material solution for composite structures. Such components can be produced quickly and efficiently, reducing production times and costs for the manufacturer. Additionally, the lightweight benefits of the product provide energy savings over the lifespan.
