Konstanz/Germany – Bioplastics are a key component of the bio-economy and offer hope in the fight against environmental problems. More and more companies are competing for this promising future-oriented market. The Ceresana report on “green” polymers has been recording impressive growth for thermoplastic starch, polylactic acid, etc. for more than 10 years. Increasingly, even sophisticated engineering plastics are being made at least in part from renewable raw materials. However, the burgeoning field of the bioeconomy is also becoming increasingly confusing: bio-based and biodegradable, biogenic and bio-preferred, bio-attributed and bio-certified...

At the same time, the markets are developing dynamically: Innovations along the entire value chain, new applications in industry and the consumer goods sector, and growing investment are making bioplastics increasingly attractive, not only ecologically but also economically. Companies are faced with the challenge of maintaining an overview – and making the right strategic decisions.

A review of these developments as well as current information on economic dynamics, innovations, and practical applications of biobased plastics will be provided at “Future of Bioplastics” on September 10 and 11, a new online event organized by Ceresana.

Practice-Oriented, Versatile, and International

Bioplastics had already played a prominent role at the “Future of Bioeconomy” event at the successful start of the “Future of Bio” digital event series. At the next event, 12 exciting keynotes will be dedicated to biopolymers: Experts from renowned and innovative companies such as Aquapak, BASF, UPM, Plastrans, Normec OWS, NG Nordic, Westerkamp, and Total Energies Corbion as well as Aimplas, Biobased Circular, SKZ and Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, will provide information on innovations and trends, practical examples, and economic perspectives.

Interested stakeholders from a wide range of sectors will participate in interactive panel discussions: Representatives of start-ups, large companies, or specialist media, the investment and finance sector, science and research, politics or administration are invited. There will be plenty of networking opportunities on both days of the event in order to establish contacts, strengthen business relationships, and exchange experiences.

Opportunities for Bioplastics

The potential for alternative polymers is huge: No other material is as ubiquitous and shapes our world as comprehensively as plastics – from agricultural films and textiles to household appliances, electronics, medical technology, and the construction industry through to automotive engineering, aviation, and aerospace. However, the packaging industry is by far the largest consumer of plastics today. In the context of the “Green Deal” and the circular economy, bioplastics can offer convincing solutions for this economic sector in particular. However, the availability of suitable biogenic raw materials and the implementation of innovations in the form of creating marketable products are major challenges.

“Future of Bioplastics” will take place on September 10 and 11, 2025, both as a half-day event. The English-language online event is free of charge.
