The Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, TNO has acquired Avantium’s bioaromatics business which includes patents and know-how of technologies that produce bio-derived products for polymers and coatings.
The 5-kilo tonne plant will be constructed at the Chemie Park Delfzijl in the Netherlands and is expected to cost 33 million dollars. The project is anticipated to play a vital role towards the adoption of sustainable feedstock in the chemicals industry.
Avantium’s new demo plant in the Netherlands will utilise the firm’s Ray technology to produce plant-based mono-ethylene glycol. With an annual capacity of 10 tonnes, the unit will also produce plant-based mono-propylene glycol.
The Vehicle project aims to develop 100 % plant-based chemicals from renewable raw materials. Consortium members also intend to increase business opportunities of existing and future biorefineries by showcasing the applicability of their sugar streams in numerous downstream options.
