The pigging technique meets not only the requirements of hygiene, but also saves raw materials and cleaning agents and adds flexibility to the production process — reproducibility, automation, small batch numbers and intermediate storage of raw materials are likewise easily implemented.
Aseptic Pigging Provides Substantial Benefits for Food
The cost savings are considerable, as an example from the foodstuffs industry shows: An average process installation, with a pipe length of 100 metres and 50 millimetre internal pipe diameter, is charged with 800 production batches per year. Between each batch, a cleaning routine takes place. With a product density of one kilogram per litre, around 157 tonnes per year of the raw product would be saved. At a product cost of 50 Eurocents per kilogram, the saving amounts to around 78 500 Euro per year.

In the chemicals, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics industry, the costs of the raw product are between ten and one hundred times higher, which leads to correspondingly greater savings. With conventional cleaning, there is an additional waste product of more than 5000 litres of water mixed with caustic solution, requiring costly disposal. ●
