The exceptional importance of Green IT and Green Chemistry also becomes apparent in international current events. These days the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a US organization, is in the news andit develops and establishes global standards for sustainability reports. The GRI introduced its Focal Point USA at the New York Stock Exchange in January 2011 with the intention of joining NYSE Euronextin promoting “sustainability reporting” in financial markets worldwide.

By using OSIsoft’s real-time performance management, the CO2 emissions in the production processes have been reduced by 15 million tons a year. The chemical company LyondellBasellalso controls and administrates its CO2 emissions applying the Microsoft-based solution,VisionMonitor Compliance Intelligence (VMCI), over a Web-based dashboard and for this reason realizes strictest compliance requirements.“

Microsoft itself benefits froma highly effectiveconservation initiative to curb power consumption throughintelligent building control at its own facilities in Cologne and Munich. Innovative container computer centres consist preferably of recyclable materials and make do with ambient air for cooling. Cloud computing infrastructures offer the possibility to install computer centres close to renewable energy sources. Microsoft also uses the environmental sustainability dashboard of Microsoft Dynamics AX designed for medium-sized enterprises. This solution, certified by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), records energy and emission values integrated with ERP processes and ensures compliant reporting concerning CO2 data, amongst other things.

Pharmaceutical Industry: Innovations Shape the Future

In projects of this kind,the industryis changing its point of view.The keynote speaker of the conference, Rolf Hansmann, headof CST Architecture and New Technologies at Sanofi Aventis Pharma Germany GmbH, emphasizes this. In his opinion, innovation is the key to energy saving, reduction of dangerous chemicals in manufacturing and securing the disposal of hazardous substances.
