Ultra-Compact Granulation and Drying What to Do When Workfloor Space is at a Premium
Granulation and drying in a single, compact piece of equipment – When a Mexican pharmaceutical manufacturer was looking for a granulation solution, the challenge was in the small footprint required. Material loading, granulation and discharge had to be carried out in limited space. The solution: a technology that could do it all.
Think global, act local: This is a creed in which Chinoin, one of the leading pharma firms in Mexico, takes a lot of pride. Since ninety years, the company is committed in the development, manufacture and commercialization of medicines for human and animal health.
“We are a company where valuable people find the opportunity to develop”, states Jorge Trejo López, Director of Operations at Chinoin. “This has led to constitute an experienced team committed to product quality.”
As the firm is active on both domestic and international markets, its facilities in Aguascalientes were built following international best practices, aiming to maximize product capacity and quality control, López confirms. Equipped with top-level technologies, the plant produces solids and semi-solids, liquids and injectables. But as the need for a new granulation solution arose, there was a catch to it: “We were looking for granulation equipment suitable for working batches up to 60 kg in a small room”, explains López.
“The market offered us three solutions. First, the line was composed of a high shear mixer and a fluid bed processor: this would have ensured high efficiency, but was too bulky for us. As a second option, continuous manufacturing technologies would have been suitable mostly for processing big volumes of a single API. That is why we finally chose a single pot processor: granulation and drying in one single, compact piece of equipment.”
Together Again for Granulation and Drying
The choice fell upon the Roto Cube, a Single Pot Processor designed by the Italian company Ima, which is an all-in-one granulation solution with high flexibility for both wet and single-pot processes. The unit contains all its components in the same housing: processing bowl, filters, mill, discharge valve and heavy duty components. It thus allows the entire process from the loading of raw materials to the discharge of dry granules, carried out in a single, contained bowl, thus eliminating the contact between product, operator and the environment.
And it gets better: “In addition, Roto Cube allows us to count on Ima’s support in process optimization”, López adds. “Our collaboration with the company’s process technologists helps us to maximize the quality of the final product.”
Chinoin has big plans for the future: Only recently, the company carried out the facility acceptance test for an Atlantis washing station by Ima, designed to wash and dry containers and other components automatically. New units for capsule filling and tablet pressing for medium throughput are next in line. López even has another surprise up his sleeve: “We will open a new facility in three years — and Ima will be our trusted partner.”
