The BMS/EMS package from Eurotherm integrates two types of control system — a building management system (BMS) and an environmental monitoring system (EMS) — that until now have generally had to be managed separately in the pharmaceutical industry.

As well as providing a simpler and cheaper way to do this, the combined system can eliminate problems with compatibility and even validation, the company says. The BMS/EMS package is designed to cope with the increasingly stringent regulations covering both production and storage environments for pharmaceutical products and ingredients. It controls and records data from heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in storage and production areas, with data logging to 21 CFR part 11 standards, and secure remote operation over the internet if required. Features include standard modules, validation templates, and reporting facilities; redundancy; scalability from single rooms to entire plants; and easy maintenance, including sensor calibration. Pharmaceutical manufacturer Roche is using the system to monitor temperature and humidity of refrigerators, freezers and storage rooms. The Roche system is based on three Eurotherm 6180 recorders and a SCADA server.
