A feature on the Indian process sector’s ability to conform to Industry 4.0 – Industry 4.0 has become a keyword for the engineering world as a whole. However, it is a challenging leap that comes along with various challenges. With industry experts’ views on the several challenges and possible solutions, we have tried to find out whether the Indian process sector is ready to embrace Industry 4.0.

Industrie 4.0 or Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, refers to the seamless integration and real-time exchange of information across the manufacturing life cycles. It also includes concepts such as ‘Connected Factory’ and ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ (IIoT), which are expected to gradually revolutionize interactions between humans and devices.

“Industry 4.0 is a vision of tomorrow’s manufacturing and a culmination of concepts such as smart factories, cyber physical systems, Internet of Things and big data,” explained Managing Director, B&R Industrial Automation Pvt Ltd, PV Sivaram.

Connecting Devices will Help Companies Improve Efficiency.

According to General Manager, India, Red Lion Controls, Naveen Kumar Mote, “Using protocol conversion can help get disparate equipment to communicate across multi-vendor environments. While monitoring process that includes collection and analyses of data can help develop more efficient processes and reduce downtime.

Smart Solutions Trend: Plant Maintenance Goes Mobile with Industry 4.0

11/11/2014 - Will tomorrow's machine fitter be an IT expert?–In the near future, members of the maintenance team will be expected to be as proficient in handling data and smart phones as they are with wrenches and welding torches. But what needs to be done to turn the vision of Maintenance 4.0 into a viable concept? PROCESS took a closer look at the next industrial revolution. read...

Furthermore, such integration can lead to enhanced human–machine interaction that leads to ease of operations. Phoenix Contact set up a manual workstation at HANNOVER MESSE 2015 demonstrating the same concept. “At this station, the labels for terminal blocks were automatically printed and then attached to the terminals by hand. A visual assistance system facilitated the manual process. A panel PC of the Design line product family indicated to the worker the exact location where labels need to be placed. It is a perfect example of humans and machines working together,” revealed Vice President, Range of products that Red Lion Controls offers.

Always Look on the Bright Side

Advantages of Industry 4.0 are not limited to manufacturers but end-customers can also be benefitted from it. With this regard, Head Sector Management, Schaeffler Industrial, Devkumar Davesar said, “All factors such as quality, cost and delivery must be optimized to improve value to customers. This is also one of the underlying objectives of the Industry 4.0. By using existing and new technologies for integration of processes and entities along the entire value chain with innovative solutions will help in bringing down the cost. This can be achieved by eliminating waste and improve the efficiency of production systems. In turn, this will improve their competitiveness too.”
