Polycarbonate Technology Technology Takes Phosgene–Free Polycarbonate to the Next Level

Alzenau/Germany (DST) — Engineers of the EPC Group, headed by Dipl.-Ing. Michael Streng, developed an efficient and flexible method for the continuous, large-scale production of high-quality polycarbonate that has been used in a Chinese 100,000 tons/Year production plant (constructed in 2012). For this project the proprietary and patented technology Variplant was used, which was successfully transferred from the pilot plant scale to the industrial scale. The applied technology is a transesterification method based on the raw materials of diphenyl carbonate (DPC) and bisphenol A (BPA).

Now, this phosgene-free polycondensation method was further developed after the successful commissioning of the plant in, 2015 by taking into account the experiences from the first generation of large-scale polycarbonate production technology: "We have examined our process in China very closely. It has now an increased robustness to variations in raw materials, further process simplifications and enhanced efficiency. Our technology allows the new multi-stage vacuum generation to be coupled with an intelligent condensation process control for an efficient exhaust vapour management, leading to accelerated, more flexible and more reliable polymer production", said Michael Streng on the second generation of advanced large-scale polycarbonate production process.
