Belgium — The value chain initiative Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) announced that it has filed its first application for EU authorisation of mechanically recycled polystyrene (rPS) as food contact material.
Styrenics Circular Solutions, the joint industry initiative focusing on the acceleration of styrenics recycling, has once again proved that polystyrene is mechanically recyclable to food contact standards. The second super-cleaning technology was successfully tested for food contact mechanical recycling of polystyrene.
Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) was established with an aim to increase the circularity of styrenic polymers. Greiner Packaging, one of the leading European plastic packaging manufacturers has recently joined SCS and will now work together to achieve the unique circularity capacity of polystyrene.
Under the terms of the agreement, SCS members Ineos Styrolution, Total, Trinseo and Versalis (Eni) will carry out an in-depth evaluation of Pyrowave’s proprietary plastic-to-plastic chemical recycling technology. Pyrowave claims that this technology will enable Europe to meet its sustainability goals.
