The environment in the cement production process is challenging: abrasive materials, dusty air and high temperatures make it difficult to measure process parameters. Despite these extreme conditions, measuring equipment must operate reliably and reproducibly. Various measuring principles are used in this challenging environment: a freely emitting radar can measure the fill-level reliably through thick dust. A capacitive sensor works precisely, even where abrasive materials are involved. Electro-mechanical measuring principles are also deployed that are unaffected by the dust in tall silos. Thermal mass flowmeters measure the compressed air distribution in standard cubic meters and provide accurate consumption data.
Another challenge in the cement industry is that of using raw materials and energy to conserve resources in the best possible way. Precise logging of individual consumptions and the ability to allocate these to cost centres is important to being able to identify and act on savings potentials. In addition to legal regulations, with increasingly stricter limits, sustainability and environmental protection play a forward looking role in equipping a company with state-of-the-art measuring technology.
