South Africa: Sener Provides Solar Technology Solar Park Complex for € 500 Million

A consortium formed by the engineering and technology group Sener, and led by Acciona, a global infrastructure and renewable energy company, has started the turnkey construction of the Kathu Solar Park Complex.

Kathu/South Africa – The contract was awarded by the consortium that owns the project and has a volume of more than € 500 million.

Located in the town of Kathu, in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, this project is part of the 2010 IRP (Integrated Resource Program) National Electricity Plan, and shall increase the country's power generation capacity to 86.8 GW in 2030. 24 % of which are planned to be provided by renewable sources.

The consortium will carry out the engineering, construction management and commissioning of the plant with Sener supplying the main technology of the facility. The 100 MW plant will begin operations in 2018 and will be supply electricity for approx. 80,000 households.

This is the second solar thermal project in South Africa where both companies are working together, the first being the 50 MW Bokpoort plant (Upington), which has recently started operation.
