New parallel reactor technology based on ideas originally developed by Shell will cut test times and increase throughput when screening catalysts in the oil and petrochemical industries. The FLOWRENCE system from Avantium Technologies is a parallel-flow reactor platform that allows 16 heterogeneous catalysts to be tested on a small scale under conditions that scale up easily to industrial applications. Avantium has supplied the first FLOWRENCE systems to major oil and petrochemical companies in Europe and the US. FLOWRENCE is suitable for gas-phase, liquid-phase, and trickle-flow operation. It has been developed from Nanoflow technology originating within Shell, and transferred to Avantium at its foundation in 2000. Improvements made by Avantium include proprietary pressure regulation, reactor design, robust automation, data storage, size reduction and an increased number of reactors. Applications include catalyst testing for hydrogenation, desulfurization, gas-to-products, water-gas shift, and hydrotreating.
