Covestro board member Klaus Schäfer takes over the chairmanship of Dechema in January. The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) was unanimously elected to office at the board meeting on 30 November. Schäfer succeeds Prof. Rainer Diercks, who has held this position since 2013.
Frankfurt/Germany — Klaus Schäfer has been a member of Covestro's Executive Board since 2015 and has been the company's Labor Director since mid-2017. As CTO of Covestro, he is responsible for production and technology and all chemical production sites. Schäfer cited sustainability as the key topic for the future, which determines many other topics such as bioeconomics, energy and raw materials. "Dechema must offer platforms for discussion and exchange between industry and science, between users and technology providers, and geared to what the world needs," said Schäfer after his election. "Our portfolio of topics is currently optimally aligned for this purpose.
The general meeting elected three new members to the Dechema board:
Steffen Bersch, Member of the Executive Board of the Gea Group, strengthens the apparatus and plant engineering group;
Michael Grund, Head of Business Transformation at Merck, is new representative in the Chemical Industry/Biotechnology Group;
Prof. Wolfgang Marquardt, Chairman of the Executive Board of Forschungszentrum Jülich and Vice President of the Helmholtz Association, was elected to the Dechema Executive Board as a representative of the Science Group.
Prof. Ferdi Schüth, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim and Vice President of the Max Planck Society, Christian Bruch, Member of the Executive Board of Linde, and Jürgen Stebani, Managing Director of Polymaterials, were re-elected. The members of the Dechema Executive Board are elected for a three-year term and are divided into the groups "Science", "Apparatus and Plant Engineering" and "Chemical Industry/Biotechnology". They thus represent the most important areas of Dechema.
