UBE chemicals ordered two new recovery boilers from Finnish Metso for a nylon production in Thailand. With this new equipment, the Japanese chemical company hopes to optimise the chemicals recovery process.

Rayong/Thailand – Metso supplies two new recovery boilers for a nylon factory of UBE Chemicals in Rayong, Thailand. The Finnish company is confident to boost the efficiency of the combustion of recovered chemicals with the components, creating energy extraction benefits with low burden on the environment. The total value of the process optimisation works is above € 10 million.

Leftover chemicals from nylon production processes are usually recovered for combustion. Metso's recovery boiler concept, proven in the pulp- and paper industry, could bring efficiency to UBE's nylon production, officials believe: "Our choice in Metso for this project is due to their innovative and efficient skills proven during earlier cooperation", says Watchara Pattananijnirudorn, Executive Vice President of UBE Chemicals in Thailand. "Metso has previously performed a similar replacement for UBE Chemicals in Spain when a new combustion plant for chemicals was installed with exceptional results."

Metso's work at Rayong includes replacing the entire pressure vessel with a new designed incinerator that will be installed within the existing structure. The current combustion process will be replaced with a new and more efficient solution in terms of recovery and end combustion of chemicals. Commercial start-up and take over is scheduled for summer 2012. The new pressure burns fluid fuels that are sprayed into the combustion chamber at two levels. Air system and rodding are completely automatised for remote operation. According to Metso, special attention was paid to the exhaust of sodium carbonate carry over in flue gases and the recovery of the firing heat.
