Pipeline Safety and Security Pipeline Integrity from Canada to Kazakhstan

Editor: Dominik Stephan |

Pipelines are the lifelines of an energy hungry world – Water, oil or gas are transported over continents, below oceans or through deserts in pipelines. Yet, this boom raises the question of pipeline integrity and security. Issues, that are discussed at the 7th AMI international conference on Pipeline Coating in Vienna.

The market for pipelines is growing worldwide to secure energy, chemical and water supply and for carbon capture and storage from North America to the Far East. The advent of shale gas has led to new lines being planned to transport this cheap natural gas. In many geographic areas the growing population is placing high demands on water supplies and this is leading to more pipelines being built from desalination plants and other sources – special potable water lining coatings are available from Hempel for this new infrastructure.

This expanding global demand is driving the construction of new pipelines across ever more challenging environments from abrasive desert sands to deep subsea. Speakers from across the world will be debating the requirements for ensuring the structural integrity and protection of steel pipes at the 7th AMI international conference on Pipeline Coating 2015 scheduled for 17-19 February in Vienna, Austria.

Noru Tsalic of AMI Consulting will open the conference with a paper on the markets for pipe coatings. This is followed by the PetroChina Pipeline Company speaking on the effects of shale gas exploration in China on the pipeline coating industry and an overview of developments in the Netherlands from NV Nederlandse Gasunie.

Pipeline Coating Up Close

The pipe coaters are addressing a range of issues including Arcelor Mittal Tubular Products of Kazakhstan, which is looking at the challenges of coating special steel pipes and Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung, which has new techniques for multilayer coating. Out of Egypt Petrojet has a case study of the 16th Qatar Petroleum pipeline project and from the US NOV Tuboscope practical experience of the use of internal thermoset coatings.

This year there are a number of key papers from pipeline operators who are talking about their experience of pipeline protection in the field from coating selection to failure and repair. Qatar Petroleum is speaking on material selection and Petronas will outline studies of coating failure. Methods for surveying underground pipe coatings will be highlighted by the Iranian Oil Pipeline and Telecommunication Co.
