Oil India’s well in Assam caught fire on Tuesday after leaking for 14 days. The oil well is still burning and the Indian Air Force and the army have been called in to support firefighting operations.

India – An oil well in Assam, Northeastern India has been leaking gas for 14 days and on Tuesday it caught fire. Owned by Oil India, one of the largest natural gas liquids company in the country, the well located in the Tinsukia district is still burning as officials try to contain the fire. According to news reports, the fire has been controlled in a 1.5-km radius around the site however, it is still burning.
The Indian Air Force and the army have been called in to support firefighting operations and assist in rescue and relief work after the state government and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) failed to control the situation. On May 27, the oil well had a blowout and since then the state government was monitoring the situation and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was deployed in the area.
Oil India in a statement said that the well caught fire while clearing operations were going on. The massive fire that could be seen from 10 km away has affected local biodiversities and nearby villages have been evacuated. Two firefighters of Oil India have also been found dead near the site.
