The fertilizer production grows in India to serve the demand for food of a growing population. Currently, India is the second largest producer of fertilizer in the world.
The production of Urea has increased from 19.65 million Metric Tonne in Financial Year (FY) 2000-01 to 21.88 million metric tons in FY 2011-12 (projected). According to Srikant Kumar Jena, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, India is completely dependent on import for Potassic fertilizers and up to 90 per cent dependent on import for Phosphatic fertilizers. The production of combined P&K fertilisers has increased from 12,3 million tons in FY 2000-01 to 15,9 million tons in FY 2011-12 (projected).
Only recently, the Indian government had finalized a new Urea policy, setting of long and ongoing discussions. In India, the production of fertilizers profits from public subsidiaries, especially for raw materials.
