Bulk Solids and Powder Technology In the Mood for Powtech 2016 — What's in Store for Particle Experts?

From April 19 to 21 the world of mechanical process engineering will meet at Powtech 2016. About 900 exhibitors will present latest technologies for processing, analysis and handling of powder and bulk solids in Nuremberg. We'll get you in the right mood for the event.

A sharp view is always worth it when it’s about particles, powders and granules. After all the shape, size or the surface finish often influences the end product. Whether it is the dissolving behaviour of the washing powder, the discharge speed in the silo or even the potential explosion hazard in a plant. If plastic particles have to be degassed faster, a smaller particle size is probably the right choice.

It becomes clear from these few examples that for particle technology and plants for powder and bulk solids handling, we need to have one important feature: We are talking about close professional cooperation between plant/apparatus manufacturers and users as also government authorities if fire and explosion safety is involved.

At this year’s Powtech there is enough time and space to address different challenges of powder and bulk solids technology. Over three days Powtech offers systems, equipment and know-how about manufacturing, processing and handling of powders, granulates or bulk materials: from grinding to filtering and separation to mixing and dispersing.

The requirements for mechanical processing are different for individual industries. In the chemical industry, the focus is on process efficiency, which in turn has an effect on the performance of individual equipment such as mixers. In the construction materials industry, the composition e.g. in cements decides the type of packaging and the respective bagging system. Crushing and sorting technologies are mainly in demand for an efficient recycling process. And the manufacturers of industrial glass and ceramic solutions are interested in de-dusting systems and filter systems. Modern systems are aligned precisely towards the respective processing technologies and they need far less space in the production environment.

On the other hand many topics are relevant across industries, for example explosion protection is an important topic for many Powtech exhibitors as well as visitors. If explosive clouds of dust and effective ignition sources cannot be safely prevented, additional constructive protective measures are necessary — whether it is bursting discs, decoupling systems or fire- fighting equipment.

Measurement Technology in All its Facets

Measurement technology is also widely represented in Nuremberg: Only if you have the knowledge about particle properties and process parameters can you specifically influence them and get desired results. Measurement technology is also required to increase the efficiency in silo logistics, here for example modern level sensors that work with a frequency of 78 GHz are used.

Visitors can also find other measuring processes at the fair: from printing technology to temperature technology to moisture analysis technology. The field of particle analysis ranges from simple lab screens to define the size of coarse granulates to laser diffraction systems and systems based on dynamic light distribution that exactly analyze particle sizes in the micro- and nanometer range. To optimize the consistency and flow properties of a product, optical methods are also in demand for determining the particle shape.
