How Process Control Solutions Will Help Meet the Challenges

Christopher Field, of Stanford University and the Carnegie Institute for Science, has said: “We now have data showing that from 2000 to 2007, greenhouse gas emissions increased far more rapidly than we expected, primarily because developing countries like China and India saw a huge surge in electric power generation, almost all of it based on coal.” But it is not just coal-fired power plants that contribute to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Burning any kind of fossil fuels, including in factories and process plants, is also to blame.

What can be done to reduce emissions? The most effective way is to switch to renewable energy. But while we remain dependent on fossil fuels, a key short-term measure is to optimize combustion by improved control of the fuel/air ratio.

Many countries have also introduced legislation governing the amount of particulates emitted to the atmosphere. Modern emissions monitoring systems can save energy and help companies remain within the law by reducing emissions of both particulates and carbon dioxide.
