Generics are a growth market with an estimated volume of about US $ 225 billion in 2011. This already impressive figure could well be increased by another 59 percent to a total global value of US $ 358 billion in 2016, says a recent study by BCC Research. This value would make up for about 18 percent of the global pharmaceutical market, analysts say.

North America, the largest market for generic drugs, is estimated to generate a market volume of nearly US $ 73 billion in 2011. An increase by 7.9 percent per year to nearly US $ 107 billion is regarded as likely. Emerging markets, currently the second largest market for generics, could well take over the lead within the next five years: Analyst expect an annual growth by 15.1 percent to a total volume of US $ 115 billion.
