Resource efficiency indicators help in running processes such that consumption of resources is kept to a bare minimum: “More from less” is the slogan of the More Project. Its objective was the definition of real time indicators for more resource efficiency in the process. Participation was a success story for the consortium participant, which turned into hard cash.

Resource efficiency is a perennial issue for the chemicals industry, and the most valuable resource is the one that is not consumed. That goes for energy and also for raw materials, but only “what you can measure, you can also change”, says Dr. Stefan Krämer, Energy Manager at Ineos and Industrial Application Coordinator of the EU project More, which was coordinated by project coordinator Svetlana Klessova from inno.

REIs suitable for daily use of the operator

And that, surprisingly, is the crux of the matter, despite the process systems riddled with sensor- and measurement technology. Energy management systems are now established in most chemical companies, and the EnPIs collected for that are correspondingly varied. Though all these parameters are analysed subsequently — direct influence on the process is not possible with that. Real time indicators, which detect resource consumption already during the process and sound the alarm, were sought in vain till now. This is, for one, due to the complexity of the task.

Resource efficiency depends upon many factors. System design, operating modes and maintenance condition, and also external conditions, for example, the weather and the raw material used, have a role to play.

Therefore, no one has till now ventured close to the definition of long term indicators, which are suitable for daily use of the operator and the management: Here, the More project team sees the decisive levers, because ultimately, the energy efficiency of chemical production procedures is strongly dependent upon the decisions, which the plant operator makes during operations.
