Carbon Capture Grace To Lead American Carbon Capture Project

Grace was given a million grant from the Department of Energy for the development of a new, energy-efficient carbon capture technology for American power plants.

Columbia, Maryland/USA – Building chemicals company Grace has been selected to provide carbon capture technology for several US coal–fired power plants. A corresponding US $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy was recently given. The aim of this project is to develop an energy-efficient technology that captures at least 90% of power plant CO2 emissions, while minimizing electricity cost increases (current technology often consumes about 20% to 30% percent of a plant's energy output).

Grace and its research partner aim to employ the so–called rapid pressure swing adsorption (rPSA), which utilizes rapid pressure changes to capture and release CO2. Grace will work together with Battelle (renowned for process R&D and scale-up), Catacel (innovator in coated metal foil structures) and the University of South Carolina (known worldwide for PSA process R&D) on this project, being responsible for the project.
