Data transfer using fibre optic cables has become an industry standard that helps to cover large distances for data transmission. Established fibre optic technology works on distances of about 2.5 kilometres. Recent developments led to the introduction of new fibre-optics interfaces for larger distances between the field devices. Auma's new FO interface is actually capable of supporting automation solutions with a range of up to 15 kilometres, the company claims.

Due to the EMC resistance, data and supply lines can be installed in one duct. A large actuator compartment simplifies cable connection while integrated cable checks provide some self-monitoring properties: a signal level drop triggers an alarm that is transmitted to the DCS via fieldbus. Data is transferred according to the NAMUR classification or Auma standards.
