Chemspec Europe has established itself as a specialised trade fair for international manufacturers, suppliers and distributors of special- and fine chemicals — In our conversation with PROCESS, Managing Director Nicola Hamann explains, why the event, which is going to be held from 31st May to 1st June in Munich/Germany this year, has become a must-attend in the industry.
? Ms. Hamann, in the year 2015, Mack Brooks Exhibitions has become the organiser of Chemspec Europe for the first time. What particular challenge did you face in this trade fair?
Nicola Hamann: Being a platform for a highly specialised industry sector, the exhibition was a perfect fit for our portfolio as exhibition organisers. We are renowned for the successful staging of international trade fairs, in particular in the German market. When we acquired the Chemspec Europe brand, we saw huge potential for the development of the show. Although the event has been existing for some thirty years and had frequently been held in Germany, it wasn’t widely known in the DACH region. Therefore, in order to further develop the show, we were focusing on our expertise in organising trade shows in Germany: We invested in targeted worldwide marketing campaigns to attract new companies and industry specialists to our show and also made some improvements on the organisational side.
? In 2016, the number of exhibitions and the number of visitors in Basel increased by 30 %. What are your expectations this year?
Hamann: Right at the first event that we had organised, we could increase exhibitor and visitor numbers and the feedback we received from our exhibitors was thoroughly positive. They stated that they had met a large number of new business contacts. We are continuously investing in our information campaign in order to build the brand into a widely known trade exhibition for the fine and speciality chemicals industry. This year’s event will be held in Munich, one of Southern Germany’s major hubs for the chemical industry. Therefore, we are confident that we can repeat last year’s success and will be able to attract new trade visitors to the 2017 show.
? Other fine chemical trade fairs like CPhI have expanded their exhibition portfolio and have expanded their concept to include equipment manufacturers and supply companies. What is the growth strategy followed by Chemspec Europe?
Hamann: As the organisers of specialised trade exhibitions, we know that it is important to focus on a clear exhibition profile. We only amend this profile where necessary, for example when we see a specific demand for change. As regards equipment, laboratory equipment is already included in our existing show profile. In general, product areas which see a growing demand, develop in a quite sustainable way. With our dynamic approach, we believe that it will quickly become evident which areas of the show profile might require further development. For this purpose, we are also in continuous exchange with a group of exhibitors, the Chemspec Europe steering group, representing different product categories of our exhibition portfolio.
