Continuous advantage

Batch processing in pharmaceutical operations is often a less-than-ideal way to operate, points out L.B. Bohle Maschinen + Verfahren. Continuous methods for solids processing, on the other hand, are recommended by the FDA as a route to quality through improved process control and understanding.
This is the philosophy behind the new Easy Flow granulation and drying system the company is launching at Achema. Operations carried out with Easy Flow do not require in-process inspection, because the process is monitored and controlled online continuously. As a result, lost batches are said to be a thing of the past. The compact design of the Easy Flow granulator/dryer means significantly lower investment compared to batch equipment. The system can also be used for lab trials and clinical trials as well as for full production. This means that in many cases, the savings are even greater because separate laboratory equipment is no longer needed. Scale-up is a non-issue, since increased production often does not require any new equipment. Operating costs, too, are lower than with batch equipment. Labor requirements can be reduced; cleaning is quicker and less frequent; and product losses are significantly lower, thanks to the total-containment design.
