One tool for all
Standardized interface corresponding to FDT/DTM

In order to use intelligent field devices with digital interfaces, such as Hart, Profibus and Foundation Fieldbus, the user requires a tool for communicating with the field device.
To prevent a variety of different configuration tools from different manufacturers in large installations, German ZVEI working group was established to cooperate closely with the Profibus User Organisation. The result was the FDT (Field Device Tool) interface description. It enables each device manufacturer to write a device driver, which by means of a standardized, graphic user interface makes all functions of the device available to the user. This device driver is called DTM (Device Type Manager) and in addition to all device functions it provides a graphic user interface, diagnostic functions and possibilities for the device calibration. The DTM can be used in each system or standalone tool that corresponds to the FDT/DTM approach.
