Technologies for pellets and granules


Free-flowing, dust-free particles are preferred by companies who need to deal with granular solids. In these cases it is good to know companies offering different process technologies for creating granules and pellets.

Granules can be formed from solid and/or liquid raw materials, with control over a wide range of properties including bulk density, residual
moisture, particle size and solubility. The quality of the granules can be further enhanced by using coating or encapsulation technologies to add an active surface layer.

Spray granulation of liquids
Using suitable granulation technology, liquid raw materials can be transformed into dry granules in a single process step. Unlike spray drying, where every sprayed droplet becomes a single particle, in granulation the liquid is sprayed into a fluidized bed. The liquid coats the fluidized particles and dries onto their surfaces, while new seed particles are formed continuously, some from fresh droplets and others from abrasion within the bed. Mixing different raw materials in the liquid phase results in an ideal mixture of these raw materials in the granules. The liquid raw materials can be solutions, suspensions, melts or emulsions. Spray granulating an emulsion of aromatic oils, for instance, results in
granules with microencapsulated oil droplets with a much longer shelf life than liquid products.
The quality of the granules can be further enhanced by using coating or encapsulation technologies to add an active surface layer. For example, Glatt technology has been proven successful for encapsulation of flavors, microorganisms and vitamins.
